The club was founded in 1973 by a handful of competitive rowers from New Hampshire and Massachusetts. With the purchase of the property that we still use today, IRC maintains approximately 75 feet of dock on the Merrimack River, a venue that offers 4 miles of uninterrupted and scenic rowing up stream and 13 miles south to Lowell, Ma.
IRC was incorporated as a non-profit with the State of NH in 1975 and within a few years, plans were developed for a boathouse. The first step toward that goal was realized with the completion of a 40 x 100 concrete foundation. Construction of the boathouse began in the fall of 2015 and completed in 2017. In addition to storing singles, doubles, fours and eights the boathouse also features a bathroom, electricity and running water inside and outside.
Some IRC rowers have participated in both the Olympic and National Teams as the mission of the club is to develop skilled amateur rowers to compete both nationally and internationally. IRC has periodically hosted annual competitions, including trademarked regattas.
At present IRC is comprised of competitive and recreational members, whose experience levels range from novice to highly skilled. Members compete in many different races throughout the region, including US Rowing Masters Nationals and The Head of the Charles Regatta. The club provides equipment, including fours, doubles, and singles for use by its members.
